Championship: Ipswich back up to second, Middlesbrough stay in promotion fight
Ipswich Town moved back into second place in the Championship, but Middlesbrough are only three points behind them after also getting a win.
Ipswich Town leapfrogged Millwall back into the Championship automatic promotion places with a comeback 2-1 victory over Charlton Athletic.
The race to join Coventry City in the Premier League is heating up, but Ipswich ensured they took their chance to move back into second, with a game in hand still to play.
Greg Docherty slammed home the rebound from Tyreece Campbell's saved effort just 44 seconds in, punishing a poor pass from Ben Johnson.
But Darnell Furlong got them back on level terms nine minutes before the break, with a wonderful, drilled effort from just outside the box – his first goal of the season.
Jaden Philogene then got the winner from the spot in the 58th minute; Macaulay Gillesphey clumsily brought down Furlong in the box, and Philogene kept his composure from the spot, denying Charlton the point they needed to secure their place in the league.
Middlesbrough also kept their automatic promotion hopes alive, with a narrow 1-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday at the Riverside.
They sit just three points behind Ipswich, with Morgan Whittaker returning to the starting line-up to score an 11th-minute winner when he pounced on a loose back-pass from Gabriel Otegbayo.
Wednesday attempted to stretch their recent unbeaten run – all draws – to four matches, but instead, could not beat Sol Brynn as their winless streak extended to 38 games.
Elsewhere, Blackburn Rovers stormed to a 3-1 victory over Sheffield United.
Yuki Ohashi scored a brace on either side of Ryoya Morishita's effort in the first half, and though Harrison Burrows pulled a goal back 57 minutes in, United could not mount a full fightback.
And Birmingham City also put three points on the board with a 2-1 victory over Preston North End.
Jay Stansfield and Ibrahim Osman both scored within six first-half minutes, with Andrew Hughes' goal shortly after a consolation in the end.
Data Debrief: McKenna hits half-century
This was just Ipswich's second win over promoted opposition this season, and also their first such victory on the road, and it could go a long way to sending them back to the Premier League.
And it was a milestone win for Kieran McKenna, who has now won 50 matches in charge of Ipswich in the Championship.
They were deserving of their win, racking up 1.87 expected goals (xG) from their 13 shots, with Philogene leading the charge, having a team-high three shots and the second-most touches in the box (five).
