UEFA announced on Thursday that Somali referee Omar Artan will officiate the UEFA Super Cup match between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa in August, after he was unable to participate in the FIFA World Cup 2026™.
UEFA said in a statement:
"Following consultations with our sister confederation, the Confederation of African Football (CAF), UEFA has today decided to appoint Somali referee Omar Artan to officiate the 2026 UEFA Super Cup match."
The match, which pits Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain against Europa League winners Aston Villa, is scheduled to take place on August 12 in Salzburg.
Artan Missed The FIFA World Cup 2026
Artan, 34, had been selected as one of the referees for the FIFA World Cup 2026™, which is being held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico through July 19.
However, he will miss the tournament after U.S. authorities refused him entry despite his valid visa.
The appointment to the UEFA Super Cup gives the Somali official the opportunity to oversee one of European football's most prestigious annual matches, featuring the reigning Champions League and Europa League winners.
