Luis Enrique: PSG not out to defend a result but to win a game
Paris Saint-Germain face Monaco in the second leg of their Champions League play-off on Wednesday, looking to continue their title defence.
Luis Enrique insisted that Paris Saint-Germain would not rest on their laurels in their Champions League play-off second leg against Monaco.
The reigning champions won the first leg 3-2 last week, despite going 2-0 down inside the first 20 minutes and seeing Vitinha missing a penalty.
There have been 18 previous instances where PSG have won the first leg of a two-legged major European knockout tie away from home and only once have they failed to then progress (versus Manchester United in the 2018-19 round of 16).
PSG have also won five of their last seven games against Monaco in all competitions (D1 L1), while on home soil they have only lost one of their last 10 (W6 D3), a 2-0 defeat in 2020-21.
Despite their lead and impressive record against Monaco, Luis Enrique is determined to win at the Parc des Princes rather than protect their advantage.
"It'll be tricky because Monaco will be starting the game a goal down, so we need to know that there'll be tough moments," said the Spanish coach.
"The best way of doing that is to play as we normally do, to try to hold onto the ball and to press in the same way when we don't have the ball.
"We're out not to defend a result but to win a game.
"The most important thing is to know how to control our way of playing. The best approach for the game will be to play it like it's the first leg. We want to win this game and to deserve to win it."
Desire Doue has scored six goals in his last six Champions League appearances, all in braces in games against Inter (2025 final), Bayer Leverkusen (October 2025) and in the first leg against Monaco.
His next goal will be his 10th in the competition, and he’ll be aged 20 years and 267 days for this game – the current youngest PSG player to 10 major European goals is Kylian Mbappe (20y 306d).
"I think that I've always been myself. I try to give everything and to help the team in the best way possible," said Doue.
"I don't judge my performances on my goals or on my assists alone; it's my overall on-pitch contribution that counts. I work hard and am disciplined with myself, but I need to stay confident.
"I also have unwavering support from the coaching staff and from my teammates, and everything is going well."
