Guirassy: Dortmund have made 'perfect' start to Champions League play-offs
Borussia Dortmund won the first leg of their Champions League play-off against Atalanta, a victory Serhou Guirassy was thrilled with.
Serhou Guirassy believes Borussia Dortmund made the perfect start to their Champions League play-off with Atalanta after winning the first leg 2-0 on Tuesday.
Guirassy opened the scoring in the third minute at Westfalenstadion for Nico Kovac's side before Maximilian Beier doubled Dortmund's lead three minutes before the break.
Indeed, since the start of last season, Guirassy has been directly involved in more goals than any other player in the Champions League (24 – 17 goals, seven assists).
And, timed at two minutes and four seconds, it was BVB's earliest goal in the Champions League, after Andreas Moller’s first minute strike against Juventus in September 1995.
Dortmund are also unbeaten in each of their last eight home knockout stage games in the Champions League (W6 D2), which is their longest ever streak in the competition.
The Bundesliga giants travel to New Balance Arena next Wednesday for the second leg, and Guirassy believes they have given themselves a solid foundation to build on.
"We were stuck in traffic for an hour and 15 minutes, so we had to get changed very quickly in the dressing room. We didn't even have ten minutes to prepare," Guirassy said.
"But we got off to a good start. Today, I scored again with my head after a very good cross from Julian Ryerson. I think that's a perfect start to these Champions League play-offs."
Dortmund dominated from the first whistle, despite being delayed and pushing kick-off back by 15 minutes due to traffic issues on their way to the stadium.
BVB finished the game with an expected goals (xG) total of 2.1 from their nine shots, only two of which were on target, compared to Atalanta's 0.47 from their seven attempts.
It was a display that also ensured Atalanta suffered back-to-back defeats without scoring for the very first time in major European competition, much to the delight of Kovac.
"I'm very satisfied – we played good football, scored two goals and worked well in the second half," Kovac added.
"We worked very hard on a few things and pulled them off well tonight. Serhou Guirassy scored a goal and provided an assist, which is exactly what we need."
Beier, however, was left to rue some of Dortmund's missed chances, adding that he would not be underestimating Atalanta in the return leg despite their two-goal advantage.
"I would have liked us to have added another goal in the second half. I think we had one or two more chances that we could have taken," Beier added.
"A 2-0 lead is a bit tricky. But it also gives you a bit of security because you've kept a clean sheet and scored two goals.
"Overall, we're satisfied and will go to Bergamo next week full of confidence. Serhou [Guirassy] is back to doing what he does best."
