Champions League play-off draw: Real Madrid and Benfica set for immediate reunion
Benfica beat Real Madrid 4-2 in stunning fashion on Wednesday, and Jose Mourinho will meet his old side again in the play-offs.
Jose Mourinho and Real Madrid are set for an immediate reunion after Benfica were drawn against the Spanish giants in the Champions League play-offs.
Madrid, who were reduced to nine men, went down 4-2 to Benfica in remarkable fashion on Wednesday.
Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin headed home deep in second-half stoppage time to send Mourinho's team through to the play-offs at Marseille's expense.
It also saw Madrid drop to ninth, meaning they missed out on automatic qualification to the last 16.
And they are now set for an instant rematch, with Benfica to host Madrid in the first leg before travelling to Santiago Bernabeu for the reverse fixture.
They were drawn in the silver pathway, which also features holders Paris Saint-Germain, who will take on Ligue 1 rivals Monaco.
Galatasaray will face Juventus, and Borussia Dortmund go up against Atalanta.
In the blue pathway, Newcastle United were handed a meeting with Qarabag, meaning Eddie Howe's team face a long journey to Azerbaijan in mid-February.
Atletico Madrid were drawn against Club Brugge, and last season's runners-up Inter are set to face Bodo/Glimt. The other tie sees Bayer Leverkusen take on Olympiacos.
Champions League knockout play-offs draw in full:
Monaco v Paris St-Germain
Galatasaray v Juventus
Benfica v Real Madrid
Borussia Dortmund v Atalanta
