Hojbjerg says talk is cheap for Marseille after losing start under Beye
Habib Beye's Marseille reign began with a 2-0 defeat to Brest, leaving them without a victory in their last four Ligue 1 matches.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg says Marseille need to do their talking on the field after they started life under Habib Beye with a 2-0 defeat to Brest.
Beye was appointed as Roberto De Zerbi's successor on Thursday, but he was unable to inspire an instant upturn as two goals from Ludovic Ajorque condemned his new team to defeat at the Stade Francis-Le Ble.
Ajorque scored both his goals in the first 29 minutes, with Mason Greenwood missing a late penalty when presented with a chance to force a nervy finish.
Marseille have now conceded twice in the first 30 minutes of a match in 2026, also doing so against Club Brugge in the Champions League, having only done so once in 2024 and 2025 combined (versus Paris Saint-Germain on October 27, 2024).
Marseille have now lost four of their last eight matches in all competitions (two wins, two draws), as many defeats as in their previous 16 (nine wins, three draws).
Les Minots have already suffered five defeats in 2026 (four wins, three draws), with only Lille (seven) losing more often since the turn of the year, among Ligue 1 clubs.
Speaking to Ligue 1+ after full-time, Hojbjerg lamented Marseille's slow start as he said: "After 20 minutes, when we conceded the two goals, we broke the game.
"You don't have to talk a lot; you have to work a lot. We have to assume our responsibilities. What we are doing now is not good enough."
Beye is only the third of Marseille's last 15 permanent coaches (since 2009 and the start of Didier Deschamps' tenure), to start with a defeat in his first Ligue 1 match, with Andre Villas-Boas and Gennaro Gattuso also getting off to losing starts.
"The work will be global," Beye said. "When I say today that we have to regain confidence, it's about trying to get rid of this big disappointment.
"We'll do that and then we'll be working, increasing the intensity of the team. But once again, there is a lot of quality in this squad.
"It's a club that has to come back in a positive way; we're going to try to do it day after day."
